Some student of some schools in the Sagnarigu Municipality of the Northern region have resorted to improvising nose mask to stay safe as school reopens for final year students of Tertiary, Senior High and Junior High Schools, and Gold Track second year students.
Some private and public schools in the Northern region had yet to receive nose masks after the third day of school reopening in Ghana. www.zamireports.com can also confirm that while some schools in the region received supplies of the promised Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) by government Wednesday July 1, others had not.
Some students of the Bagabaga Demonstration Junior High School are among the list of students who have for third day attended class without nose masks. A situation that exposes not only the students and teachers to COVID-19 but their communities as well.
For students like Abubakari Abdul-Jalil and Abdullah Issah, staying safe was not a choice but a priority. While Abdullah Issah could afford a personal nose mask at a cost of GHS 3, Abubakari Abdul-Jalil could only make do with a piece of his sport wear and with that piece, Abdullah Issah assists his classmate to fit it on ahead of lessons Tuesday June 30.
Just like Abubakari Abdul-Jalil, many student at school from Monday June 29 to Wednesday July 1 had no nose masks on.
Only eleven (11) out of the five hundred and forty seven (547) schools in the Northern region had received their supplies by close of day of June 31. They are; Gusheigu, Karaga, Kumbungu, Nanton, Tatale, Tolon, and Zabzugu districts, and Nanumba south, Sagnarigu, and Savelugu municipals, and Tamale Metro.
The Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Education Service in the region Donald Awaala Kanzoni attributed the delay in distribution to delay in delivery, a situation he said was beyond their control.
“As at even yesterday, sanitizers and nose masks were now arriving so we thought that with some of the districts that are far away, we will call them today to come for their consignment”.
Checks with the Northern Regional Education Service Wednesday July 1 revealed all districts and municipal offices of the Ghana Education Service in the region have picked their supplies. “Our supplies are what i’m taking to the school, they are in my car”, said a teacher of the Ullum-dinayat Junior High School.
“The supplies consist of six Veronica buckets, nose masks, gallons of liquid soap, and bottles of hand sanitizers, they are a lot and hopefully, they will be enough for our seventy two students and we the teachers”, the teacher who pleaded anonymity added.
www.zamireports.com cannot independently confirm if management of the Bagabaga Demonstration Junior High School has taken delivery of the school’s supplies as management could not be reached by the time of our visit Wednesday July 1.
But hopefully, Abubakari Abdul-Jalil will receive his two personal nose masks tomorrow Thursday July 1 so he can adequately protect himself.
