Personality Profile: Meet Humu; the Only Female Fire Appliance Driver In G.N.F.S

Adventurous, daring, and determination, those are her attributes. A female seated behind the driving wheel of a trailer from Ghana’s neighbour Burkina Faso through the streets of Tamale was just the challenge she needed. “If she could drive a trailer then I can fly an aircraft”, she murmured to herself.

Meet Fire Woman Humu Mohammed of the Northern Regional Fire Service Headquarters. She represents hope for young females in Ghana.

Humu Mohammed is a former student of the Saint Mary Vocation Institute in Tamale. She studied Advanced Catering after her Senior High School education at the T.I Ahmadiya Senior High School in Salaga in the Savanna region where she studied catering.

Humu Mohammed was born on March 3 1992, in Sagnarigu in the Northern region to Mohammed Fuseini, a former Northern Regional Director of the Cooperative Society and Sanatu Fuseini, a trader. She was trained as a driver by the Metro Mass Transit in Tamale in 2011 and 2 underwent her mandatory internship in 2012.

Humu Mohammed geared up for work

In 2015, the 6.55ft tall Humu landed herself a place in the Ghana National Fire in the Savelugu District Fire Service as a recruit under the Security model of the National Youth Employment. Her journey to become a heavy duty vehicle driver officially started in 2016 after she was recruited in the Ghana National Fire Service Training Center.

She was placed at the Tamale Metro Fire Station after nine months of training. She drove the fire appliance at the Tamale Metro Fire Service until she was transferred to the Regional Headquarters in December 2019, where she drives the fire appliances.

Humu Mohammed enrolled for a Defensive Drivers Course in the State Transport Corporation to upgrade herself. She holds a license D. Fire Woman Humu Mohammed is the fifth born among six siblings and married to Yussif Mohammed, a heavy duty driver.
