An unknown gunman has shot and killed one Abdul-Halim who attempted to rescue a rape victim from the gunman in Nyanshegu, a suburb of Tamale in the Northern region.
The victim, Rashida Abukari according to a police report was shot on the right thigh when she resisted the rape attempt.
“On 01 July 2020 about 0400 hrs, an unknown gunman who had wanted to rape victim Rashida Abukari in her room at Nyanshegu, shot her on the right thigh when she resisted”.
“Suspect who took to his heels after the act also shot deceased Abdul- Halim who made an attempt to apprehend the suspect”, the statement published by the Northern Region Police Crime Officer Superintendent Kwabena Otuo Acheampong said.
Victim Rashida Abukari is in stable condition and responding to treatment at the Tamale Teaching Hospital. Body of deceased has been deposited at the Tamale Teaching Hospital mortuary for autopsy.
The Crime Scene team has visited the scene of the incident.
Meanwhile, the Northern Regional Police Criminal Investigation Department has launched investigation into the incident.
Suspect Tahiru Mohammed, 35, and a resident of Tamale in the Northern region has been arrested by the Northern Regional Police Command for allegedly attempting to rape Rashida Abukari, also a resident of Tamale.
In an identification parade, victim Rashida identified him as the one who shot her.
A police report issued by the Northern Regional Police Crime Officer Superintendent Kwabena Otuo Acheampong indicated, “the suspect is in the custody of the police assisting with investigation”.
